Ba simolotse di scam artists (Scam artists are at it again). In this digital age, social media has become an essential part of our lives, allowing us to stay connected with friends, share experiences, and even conduct business. However, the rise of social media platforms also brings along a dark side: scams. These scams can trick even the savviest users, they even tried scamming us (see below), so no one is safe from these attempts. Today, let’s dive into how you can protect yourself from social media scams, especially on Facebook.

What Are Social Media Scams?
Social media scams are deceitful schemes designed by scammers to trick users into giving away personal information, money, or access to their accounts. They do this mainly by asking you to reset your account by clicking on a link that will collect all your information. These scams can take many forms, from phishing attempts to fake charities, and they often rely on the trust people place in their networks. Being aware of the warning signs is your first line of defence.

Common Types of Scams
Let’s take a quick look at some of the most common scams you might encounter:
- Phishing Scams: These fraudsters often send messages or post links that lead to fake websites, urging you to enter your login details or personal information. Once you do, they can access your accounts and steal your identity.
- Prize or Lottery Scams: You might receive a message saying you’ve won a lottery or prize, but to claim it, you need to give personal information or pay a fee. Spoiler alert: you didn’t win anything!
- Investment Scams: Scammers promote attractive investment opportunities, often promising high returns with little risk. These schemes can involve cryptocurrencies or other dubious ventures.
- Impersonation Scams: Scammers create fake profiles of friends or well-known individuals, reaching out to you for money or sensitive information.
Tips to Stay Safe
So, how can you protect yourself? Here are some effective tips:

- Think Before You Click: Be cautious with messages that ask you to click on links or provide personal information. If it seems suspicious, it’s best to avoid it. Or just to be on the safe side, don’t click on links you don’t trust or links from people you don’t know.
- Verify Sources: Always double-check the authenticity of any offer or message, especially if it comes from someone you know. Don’t hesitate to ask them directly if they sent the message. Best practise, always ask what the link is about. If no explanation is given, don’t click on it.
- Use Strong Passwords and 2FA: Create strong, unique passwords for your accounts and enable two-factor authentication where possible. This extra layer of security can help keep your accounts safe even if your password is compromised. Don’t use the same password in multiple accounts. Use different passwords with capital letters, words, numbers etc. Mix and match.
- Stay Updated: Regularly update your devices and apps to ensure you have the latest security patches. Outdated software can leave you vulnerable to attacks.
- Always log off: Always log off from any device you use to get online e.g. log off from internet cafe, log off from your friends computer if you borrowed it, log off from your work computer every time you leave your desk unattended. Mostly importantly always lock your phone when not in use and put your phone password in secret so no that one else can see it.
- Educate Yourself and Others: The more you know about potential scams, the better you can protect yourself. Share this information with friends and family to keep everyone informed.
How to Report Scams
If you encounter a scam, it’s crucial to report it. Here’s how to do it on Facebook:
- Reporting on Facebook:
- Go to the profile or page where you found the scam.
- Click on the three dots (•••) in the top right corner of the profile.
- Select “Find support or report.”
- Follow the prompts to report the scam.
- Other Platforms: Most social media sites have a similar reporting process. Look for options to report posts, comments, or users.
- Inform Friends: If the scam involves someone you know, notify them about the suspicious activity on their account.
